What is a PBSP?

A Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP) is a comprehensive, individualized plan developed to proactively address challenging behaviors by focusing on teaching and reinforcing positive, functional alternatives. Grounded in the findings of a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), the PBSP outlines clear strategies tailored to the person’s unique needs, abilities, and environment. It includes preventative measures to reduce triggers, skill-building approaches to replace maladaptive behaviors, active strategies of what to do when a maladaptive behavior if occurring, crisis intervention strategies if needed, as well as recovery strategies. The purpose of a PBSP is not only to reduce problematic behavior but to improve the individual's overall quality of life by promoting independence, communication, self-regulation, and social engagement. It empowers both the individual and their support team with consistent, evidence-based tools to create supportive environments that foster long-term success and well-being.
