Functional Behavior Assessment

(FBA)

What is an FBA?

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a systematic process used to identify the underlying causes or functions of challenging behaviors. It involves gathering data through direct observation, interviews, and review of records to understand when, where, and why a behavior occurs. The goal of an FBA is to look beyond the behavior itself and determine the purpose it serves for the individual—whether it's to gain attention, escape a demand, access a tangible item, or meet a sensory need. By identifying these patterns and triggers, professionals can develop more effective, individualized behavior intervention plans that are proactive, and to teach alternative skills. Ultimately, an FBA helps ensure supports are person-centered and rooted in empathy, promoting long-term growth and success for individuals with Autism, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD), and other complex needs.
